The Medway River takes a while to freeze. First the edges go, then the ice comes down in slabs and stacks against itself, and for a few weeks the whole river sounds different. This one was painted from the bank on one of those mornings.
Painted directly onto bookmark-sized card — a small original that lives in a book rather than on a wall.
